Introduction
Hi! I’m Ottilia Hadaller, an aspiring elementary teacher with a love for making math engaging and meaningful. I aim to create a classroom where students are curious, confident, and motivated to explore mathematics. This website will document my journey in developing a strong mathematical mindset, share my reflections as both a learner and future teacher, and provide strategies I plan to use in my classroom to support student growth. I hope this site can also serve as a resource for families and colleagues to better understand how I approach teaching mathematics.
Mathematics Instruction
Recent research in mathematics education emphasizes shifting instruction from memorizing procedures to fostering deep conceptual understanding, reasoning, and problem-solving (Ernest et al., 2016). Teachers are encouraged to design classrooms where students explore ideas, discuss their thinking, and engage in multiple strategies to solve problems. Instructional shifts include open-ended tasks, collaborative learning, and productive struggle, all of which help students develop confidence and persistence in mathematics. Equity in mathematics is essential, as it ensures that all students, regardless of background, have access to meaningful learning opportunities and can engage with challenging content (Darragh, 2016). Developing a mathematical mindset allows students to view mistakes as opportunities for growth, build resilience, and take ownership of their learning. By providing multiple entry points, promoting discussion, and creating a supportive environment, teachers can foster motivation, engagement, and academic growth for every learner.

My Mathematics Teaching Philosophy
I want my future classroom to be a place where every student feels capable and confident in mathematics. My teaching philosophy centers on creating an environment where curiosity and collaboration are encouraged, and mistakes are valued as part of the learning process. I plan to use hands-on activities, visual representations, and real-world examples to make math meaningful and relevant.
Equity is at the heart of my philosophy. I want all students, regardless of their background or prior experiences, to have access to high-quality instruction. By using differentiation, scaffolding, and flexible grouping, I can meet students where they are and help them grow. I will also use formative assessment to monitor learning and adjust my teaching in real time, ensuring that every student has opportunities to succeed.
To strengthen my own mathematical mindset, I will reflect on my teaching, seek professional development, and collaborate with colleagues. By modeling curiosity, persistence, and enthusiasm for mathematics, I hope to inspire my students to develop confidence in their abilities and a love of learning. Ultimately, I want to be a teacher who helps students see themselves as capable mathematicians, ready to tackle challenges with confidence and creativity.
